60% of Instagram users discover new products on the platform, and 69% want links to websites where they can buy directly, according to a new report from Facebook.

THE RUNDOWN

  • Facebook launched its Portal smart home device, combining hands-free video calling with a voice-activated speaker. Portal won't have Facebook ads (for now), but it will broadcast Watch shows and run ads from third-party apps like Spotify.
  • In other Facebook news, the platform is transitioning advertisers to utilize first-party cookies with its pixel. No changes are needed to benefit from this update, and advertisers can immediately expect better tracking for Safari users.
  • Google Plus is shutting down after an internal probe revealed exposed user data. Google Plus launched in 2011 as a Facebook competitor, but it never took off, with 90% of recent user interactions lasting less than 5 seconds.
