They have more daily active users than WordPress.com has monthly active users. They’ve really cracked a lot of the social side of it."

THE RUNDOWN

  • Facebook is building a dedicated "trusted" news tab that looks like Watch for publishers after shuttering its "Trending News" section. 43% of Americans get some of their news from Facebook,  and the platform is looking to maintain that edge while improving its reputation for providing trustworthy and reliable news stories in an era of increased scrutiny on the press.

 

  • Instagram is opening its AR filter creation tool to all users. Anyone can now utilize the platform's new Effect Gallery to create their own filters, easing the need to rely on Instagram's internal designers. Snapchat opened this capability to users in early 2018, and saw over 250,000 user-submitted lenses added to the platform.

 

  • Snapchat announced a new version of Spectacles. Despite the moderate popularity of the first two generations of camera-enabled sunglasses, Snap hopes the improved camera capacity (with 3D depth-of-field) will help add to its development of fully-functional AR glasses.

Last week, Macy's launched its "All Brand New" back-to-school campaign on Snapchat and TikTok. Users on TikTok were encouraged to record and post music videos sporting their new school year style, and inspire others to do the same. This challenge has already amassed 944.5M views and counting.
